Janet Jackson's new film 'shocking'

Janet Jackson has warned audiences to expect a "deep" and "dark" experience when viewing her new film.

The singer-and-actress stars as Jo/Red in For Colored Girls, which details the struggles of nine women in America. The movie boasts other big name stars such as Whoopi Goldberg, Thandie Newton and Kerry Washington, and Janet has warned moviegoers to expect to be moved. She says the film has a sombre tone which may surprise some people.

"They're [the audience] going to be very shocked at where this takes them and it's not a happy place, it's very deep and dark," she revealed. "I think they won't be quite prepared for the journey it will take them on. But, once again, it's learning about the lives of others. And there's somebody in there that you know - that you can relate to or find yourself in."

The film has been adapted from the successful play of the same name which ran in theatres to critical acclaim in the late 1970's, written by playwright Ntozake Shange. With the play first showing on stage in New York, Janet is ecstatic that filming took place in the same city.

"You can find this story in several communities in different parts of the world, but I love the fact that it's in Harlem, that it's in New York. It puts a different twist of flavour on it. And just with the play being here and Ntozake and everything basically was born from here," she added.

Legendary film director dies

Director Blake Edwards has died in California at the age of 88.

Edwards, married to British actress Julie Andrews, died from complications of pneumonia on Wednesday morning at St John’s Health Centre in Santa Monica.

Edwards directed many classic films, including The Pink Panther.

He was “pretty much confined to a wheelchair for the last year-and-a-half,” after unsuccessful knee operations, publicist Gene Schwam said.

At the time of his death, Edwards was working on two Broadway musicals, one based on the Pink Panther. The other, Big Rosemary, was to be an original comedy set during Prohibition, Schwam said. A third-generation film maker, Edwards was praised for evoking classic performances from Jack Lemmon, Audrey Hepburn, Peter Sellers, Dudley Moore, Lee Remick and Andrews, his wife of nearly half a century.

He directed and often wrote a wide variety of movies.

Although many of his films were hits, he was nominated for Academy Awards only twice.

The motion picture academy selected Edwards to receive a lifetime achievement award in 2004 for “his writing, directing and producing an extraordinary body of work”.

Troubled actor Charlie Sheen files for divorce

Troubled US actor Charlie Sheen filed for divorce from his wife of two years, days after being taken to hospital following a reported drunken incident in New York.

The star of sitcoms "Two and a Half Men" and "Spin City" on Monday filed papers at Los Angeles Superior Court to divorce Brooke Mueller, whom he wed in May 2008 but split from on Christmas Day 2009 when arrested for allegedly assaulting her.

Sheen, 45, and Mueller, 33, have twin sons Bob and Max, born in March 2009. The couple have a pre-nuptial agreement, according to court papers.
Advertisement: Story continues below

Television station Extra TV reported that an agreement signed in May gives Mueller 750,000 US dollars (540,000 euros) as a one-time payment, plus 55,000 (40,000 euros) a month in child support.

She would get primary custody of the children, with Sheen having visiting rights, it reported.

The divorce proceedings came after Sheen was taken to hospital last week following what his publicist said was an "allergic reaction," but which local media said was due to a drunken episode in a New York hotel.

People and other entertainment magazines said the star, one of the best-paid TV actors, was hospitalized after causing serious damage to his room at the Plaza Hotel, where police found him drunk, naked and in the company of a woman.

Mueller told Extra TV in an interview to be screened Monday: "He's kinda free to do whatever he wants to do," adding, "Charlie and I don't live together anymore. He's not cheating on me. We're separated."

Sheen in August pleaded guilty to an assault charge arising from a violent Christmas Day altercation with his wife while vacationing at Aspen, Colorado, but avoided jail under a deal with prosecutors.

Sheen had several run-ins with the law in the 1990s in cases related to drugs, domestic violence and prostitution.

He has also been accused of assaulting his ex-wife actress Denise Richards, a former James Bond girl.

Himesh Reshammiya turns music publisher

Himesh Reshammiya is a music director, singer and even an actor, but what he wasn't and now is, is a Music Publisher, and not just any, but one who has global aspirations.

While his international album At Da Edge is all set to release in 122 countries, Himesh Reshmmiya' publishing company HR Musik Limited is all set to launch a talented group of singers, lyricists, composers and musicians. Himesh has big plans for this venture and intends it to be the biggest music content provider in all languages globally.

Himesh is ready to seed the industry with new, promising talent and hopes to move this industry's focus from individual talent to something that fits international standards. He seeks to provide the next generation music that would be created under Himesh's guidance and finesse, thereby assuring quality control.

HR Musik Ltd. will also be producing films, albums and singles and will be launching in 2011 with its content.

As far as his acting career goes, Himesh wasn't happy with the way things shaped up with his last release Kajraare. Instead of a proper big screen release, the film was given a DVD release after a single show played in a single screen. Learning from past, Reshammiya is now extra cautious about his upcoming Studio 18 project Ishk Unplugged starring him and Sonal Sehgal. He plans to be in complete know how involving this one as the film is complete and ready for release.

Nature of the Work

Actors, producers, and directors express ideas and create images in theater, film, radio, television, and other performing arts media. They interpret a writer's script to entertain, inform, or instruct an audience. Although many actors, producers, and directors work in New York or Los Angeles, far more work in other places. They perform, direct, and produce in local or regional television studios, theaters, or film production companies, often creating advertising or training films or small-scale independent movies.

Actors perform in stage, radio, television, video, or motion picture productions. They also work in cabarets, nightclubs, and theme parks. Actors portray characters, and, for more complex roles, they research their character's traits and circumstances so that they can better understand a script.

Producers are entrepreneurs who make the business and financial decisions involving a motion picture, television show, or stage production. They select scripts, approve the development of ideas, arrange financing, and determine the size and cost of the endeavor. Producers hire or approve directors, principal cast members, and key production staff members.

Directors are responsible for the overall creative decisions of a production. They interpret scripts, audition and select cast members, conduct rehearsals, and direct the work of cast and crew. They approve the design elements of a production, including the sets, costumes, choreography, and music. As with producers, large productions often have many levels of directors working on them. Assistant directors cue the performers and technicians, telling them when to make entrances or light, sound, or set changes. All directors must ultimately answer to the executive producer, who has the final say on all factors related to the production.

SRK gets a Ducati bike!

Shah Rukh’s most ambitious film Ra. One is still under production and there was a minor delay recently. No, this time the delay was not the result of a starry tantrum thrown by one of his co-stars. It was caused due to a bike. And it was no ordinary bike. It was a Ducati that was the cause of the glitch.

SRK and the unit of Ra. One had a major schedule shot in London. Most of the portions with SRK dressed as a super hero were shot there and a Ducati was used in these sequences. After the unit returned to Mumbai, SRK realised that they needed to shoot some more sequences on the bike. But they could not find a similar bike and SRK was left with no option but to have the bike brought from London.

Lekin, picture abhi baaki hai mere dost. The story doesn’t end here, SRK booked a bike for himself from London which took its own sweet time to arrive. Until then SRK had no option but to wait. However, now that the bike has reached Mumbai, SRK is busy shooting with it.

Whatever the fate of the movie, SRK will at least have one expensive memento to remember it by.

Though he hasn't heard of any Indian imitations of his style, incorporated in films like Disco Dancer (1983) by Mithun Chakraborty, he's aware of the importance of song and dance in Hindi cinema.

“I love to perform, and I'm sure I will enjoy singing and dancing in Bollywood,” said Travolta, adding that he does try and watch some Bollywood films, the last one he saw being Ashutosh Govarikar's Lagaan.

Travolta, who played a woman in his last musical, Hairspray, said, “They knew they needed a man to play the part, but they also needed a man to sing and dance, which is not very common any more in Hollywood, unfortunately. I thought it would be fun to create that illusion. The reactions to the film were phenomenal, because there was such a contrast from the macho roles I have played in the past. They couldn't believe I could do that. But then I grew up watching incredible women perform. We are all from that genre.”

Bollywood has hijacked Punjabi pop: Harbhajan Mann

Punjabi pop singer Harbhajan Mann believes Bollywood and piracy are the reasons behind Punjabi pop music taking a backseat. He says he is not interested in singing
for the Hindi film industry as he is happy with his individual identity.

"Six-seven years ago Punjabi music was popular at the national level, people used to love to listen to it. But now due to piracy, the sales of the albums have decreased," said Mann, who came to 92.7 Big FM's studio to promote his new album Wari Wari.

"Moreover, Punjabi being a regional language, big companies hesitate to invest money, which is the reason it has taken a backseat."

"I think to some extent Bollywood is also responsible for the fading popularity of the genre. The film industry has hijacked Punjabi music. There are so many films that have Punjabi songs. And if you have actors like Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif dancing to Punjabi beats, who would see our songs," he added.

Mann, who spent his childhood in Vancouver, Canada, started singing in 1980-81. He used to perform for the South Asian community while still in school.

He cut his first album Chithiye Ni Chithiye in 1992, but it was his 1999 album Oye Hoye that made him a name to reckon with in India.

The singer insists that the industry is suffering because they are facing a stiff competition from Bollywood.

"If we look at Hollywood, their songs have a different place, while films are separate. The problem in India is that everything is being merged into Bollywood. I know it's a hard fight, but I am optimistic that things will get better soon," he said.

Asked if he plans to do playback singing in Bollywood, he said, "I have no interest in singing for Bollywood. I have an individual identity for myself and I am happy with that.

"As a solo singer I have created an identity for myself and have been maintaining it. By god's grace everything is going great. I can't go in front of people and beg for work," he added.

Mann is not just a good singer but also a well-known actor in the Punjabi film industry. He has starred in and produced seven movies, namely Ji Aayan Nu, Asa Nu Mann Watna Da, Dil Apna Punjabi, Mitti Wajaan Mardi, Mera Pind, My Home, Jag Jeondiyan De Mele and his most recent movie Heer Ranjha.

"I have always tried to do new things and find new ways to move forward in life. At the time when pop music was not that popular, I decided to venture into acting and started producing films. I keep all the options open. It is necessary for survival," he added.

Meanwhile, Mann is gearing up for his US tour that starts in October. And after that he will start shooting for another Punjabi film in November.

James Cameron voted 'most powerful man' in film world

Cameron voted 'most powerful man' in film world Avatar director James Cameron has been named the most powerful man in the film world, beating Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan to the top spot.

The Canadian director beat Steven Spielberg, Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Nolan in the list by the Guardian newspaper's Film & Music supplement, which proclaimed him the most influential man

"Cameron occupies the top two spots in the list of the highest grossing movies of all time, with Titanic (worldwide gross: $1.8 billion) second only to Avatar ($2.7 billion). Those figures are so high that it seems scarcely worth mentioning that other of his films, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, stands in the lower reaches of the top 100 with takings of over $519 million; loose change, really," said a statement from the Guardian.

The list created by experts, including the Guardian's film editor Andrew Pulvor, studio executive Colin Vaines and former artistic director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival Hannah McGill, also highlighted the importance of Brad Pitt, Quentin Tarantino and George Clooney in its top 10.

Other notable entries in the top 100 include British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen at number 26, Prince of Persia producer Jerry Bruckheimer at number 45 and Kick-Ass screenwriter Jane Goldman at number 96.

The following are the top five among the 'Film Power 100' by the Guardian newspaper's Film & Music supplement:

1. James Cameron (director)
2. Steven Spielberg (director)
3. Leonardo DiCaprio (actor)
4. John Lasseter (director)
5. Brad Pitt (actor and producer)

The movie recounts the early life and adulthood of Lula, a one-time shoe-shine boy and metalworker who became an influential trade union leader before becoming Brazil's president in 2003.

Last year's foreign-language winner at the Oscars was an Argentine movie, "The Secret in Their Eyes."

Museum of Tolerance to honor Clint Eastwood in November

Clint Eastwood, whose most famous movie roles were trigger-happy vigilantes but whose directorial work has shown a more open-minded world view, will receive an award from the Museum of Tolerance this fall.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker will accept the museum's Tolerance Award that will be presented as part of its first international film festival, which is devoted to showcasing movies that address human rights issues. The Eastwood ceremony will take place at the festival's main gala on Nov. 14 in Los Angeles.

In a statement, Rabbi Marvin Hier, the founder and dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Museum of Tolerance, said that Eastwood is "a superb choice for this award, which celebrates those whose work shines a light on themes of acceptance, inclusion, tolerance and forgiveness."

Though he rose to fame as the gun-toting Man with No Name and the insensitive Dirty Harry, Eastwood has spent the later part of his career making movies that not only question the nature of violence but also advocate greater social acceptance.

As a director, he has gravitated toward stories that criticize masculine violence ("Mystic River," "Unforgiven"), interrogate the necessity of war ("Flags of Our Fathers," "Letters from Iwo Jima"), explore racial intolerance ("Gran Torino," "Invictus") and embrace nontraditional families ("Million Dollar Baby," "A Perfect World").

Eastwood's latest film, "Hereafter," is slated to open in the U.S. on Oct. 22.

The full lineup for the museum's 2010 film festival is expected to be announced in October. The festival is scheduled to run from Nov. 13 to 18 at the museum's three theaters in L.A.

Rajinikanth’s Enthiran on October 1?

The Kollywood trade is abuzz that Sun Pictures big budget magnum opus, Rajinikanth’s Enthiran, directed by Shankar is likely to be postponed from September 24 to October 1. However, there is no official confirmation so far on the matter.

After a very successful trailer launch last Saturday, the buzz was that the film will take a gargantuan opening worldwide. The final copy is being made ready and it should not be rushed just for the sake of a September 24 release.

Perfection is the key word. One more week delay does not matter at all for a film which has been in the making for two years.

Remember Sun Pictures are making it a worldwide event, a Tamil film has not been showcased on the international scene so big. It has to get the best of the screens and a wide release. Enthiran’s Hindi version Robot is being released like a Bollywood biggie.

However Ranbir Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra’s Anjaana Anjaani has locked in on September 24 well in advance. Remember Robot was earlier to release on September 3, then September 17, but got delayed due to post production work.

It makes better sense to go for a October 1 release, as then Robot would be the biggest movie of the week worldwide.

Michael Douglas Optimistic Despite Stage 4 Throat Cancer

Hollywood actor Michael Douglas remains optimistic despite admitting that his throat condition is apparently a lot more serious than he first thought.

On the Letterman show, the actor talks about his situation candidly.”It’s a stage four, which is intense, and they gotta go at it,” he says on the Late Show last Tuesday.

Douglas tells that he found out about his illness after having time-off with his family. He is married to Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta-Jones and has two young kids with her. Upon returning to the United States, a doctor took a look at his throat, did a biopsy, and discovered that he has Stage 4 throat cancer. All these things, including his family vacation, all happened in a span of three weeks.

Michael, whose father is the legendary Kirk Douglas, said on his interview that before things got worse, he already had throat problems for several months. Each time he would go for a check-up, doctors couldn’t find anything until after his visit to the hospital when he got back from vacation.

He told Letterman Tuesday: “I am head and neck, I am above the neck, so nothing’s gone down and the expectations are good. You like to be down at stage one but the big thing you worry about is it spreading. The percentages are very good. I would hate to say, but right now, it looks like it should be 80 percent, and with certain hospitals and everything, it does improve.”

He went on to share what he and his family did during the summer. They visited Spain, Russia and St. Petersburg which were all great and fantastic places.

Douglas’ new movie, the remake of Wall Street which is now called “The Money Never Sleeps” is set to hit the big screen later this month.

Japanese animated film director Kon dies at 46

Acclaimed Japanese animated film director Satoshi Kon, known for "Tokyo Godfathers," "Millennium Actress" and other prize-winning movies, has died of pancreatic cancer. He was 46.

Considered one of Japan's most exciting directors of animated films, or "anime," Kon was born in 1963 on the island of Hokkaido and debuted as a comic book artist at age 23 while still an art student at Musashino Art University near Tokyo. He began making animated films about 1990, establishing a style that blurred the boundaries of reality and fantasy.

Kon died Tuesday, his wife Kyoko said in a statement released on his official website, Kon's Tone.

In his Oscar-nominated 2003 film "Tokyo Godfathers," loosely based on the 1948 John Ford movie "3 Godfathers," Kon featured three homeless people instead of three cowboys, breaking with the clean and ritzy image of the Japanese capital. Kon's characters — a drag queen, a runaway high school girl and a former professional bicycle racer — pick up an abandoned infant from a garbage dump on Christmas Day and set out to find its parents.

The 2006 film "Paprika," based on a novel by popular writer Yasutaka Tsutsui, uses breathtaking cutting-edge animation and won a prize at the Brussels anime festival in 2007. Kon was working on his first children's film, "The Dreaming Machine," at the time of his death.

In a "Goodbye" statement released Wednesday, Kon said his doctor told him in May that he had terminal pancreatic cancer which had spread to his bones, and had at most six months to live. Two months later, his condition worsened and his doctor said his days were numbered. So he decided to go home and die there, he wrote.

"My biggest regret is 'The Dreaming Machine.'" he wrote. "I really worry about the film, and the staff."

The film is based on an original story, characters and a unique view of the world that "nobody else but Satoshi Kon could understand or create," he said.

He thanked his parents, his wife and his fans for their support.

"Thank you everyone," he said. "I'll go ahead now."

Sophie Monk struggling with image in LA

Sophie Monk has revealed that she has had a "tough" few years in Hollywood.

The 30-year-old Australian actress, singer and model, who moved to Los Angeles to further her career five years ago, said that people there tend to judge her on her looks without realising she has a sense of humour.

Monk told Who magazine: "It's been a tough, tough time. Over here, I'm a celebrity, but they're not sure what I've done and I struggle with that.

"In Australia, they know I've had a successful music career, that I'm a bit of a comedian. But here they just go by visual, which is tricky for me. Most blonde bombshell types don't have much personality, or they just marry a rich old man. My sense of humour is what's carried me through.

"I would be settled down and married like all my friends if I was in another career. I know I don't want to always live in the spotlight, I want a normal life. In ten years' time, I hope I'll have kids and be married to a loyal man. I want to cash in, then go home."

Coalition plans $60m film fund

The Coalition plans to establish a $60 million temporary film fund to boost production of mid-budget features if it wins the next Federal election.

The announcement was made today at the Australian International Movie Convention and forms part of the Opposition government’s newly-unveiled arts policy, which will also provide a $24.35 million boost to the regional arts scene and loans of up to $35,000 for Australia’s young musicians.

Support for the fund, which will provide matching loans to film distributors of eligible Australian films with production budgets between $7 million and $30 million, marks a win for the Screen Producers Association of Australia, which called for a similar scheme earlier this year.

The fund will match dollar-for-dollar the investments made by distributors, providing loans of between $2 million and $10 million. The fund and the distributor will recoup their advances side-by-side, with SPAA predicting the fund will deliver up to 1100 full-time jobs and trigger production of up to 18 films worth $270 million.

The fund will invest over three years and be wound up after five years, with SPAA predicting almost three-quarters of the government's investment to be returned over seven years.

The net cost of the fund, which will be overseen by Screen Australia, is estimated to be $31.9 million by 2014.

The Coalition also said it will rejig the Producer Offset to allow interim assessments so that producers can receive the proceeds of the rebate before the end of the financial year. However, it has not outlined a mechanism to do this – the Offset legislation currently resides in the Tax Act.

Ramesh Sippy's 'Sholay' turns 35 on August 15

It would be injustice with Ramesh Sippy's 'Sholay', simply saying the best movie in 70s, rather 'Sholay' is the most successful cult of film that Bollywood has ever produced, turned 35 on the 64th Independence Day this year.

From all the angle of the film, whether it is the performance of the artists, the production, the music or the dialogues, the movie is par excellent. There is not a single unnecessary line or shot, every thing is well connected and the intensity never drops.

The movie is always remembered for Dharmendra and Hema Malini pair, friendship between two heroes, the versatile actor Sanjeev Kumar who played the role of an honest police officer whose hands were chopped losing his family, and above all, the most popular villain artist Amjad Khan as Gabbar Singh, who appeared as the ferocious dacoit in the film.

According to the movie viewers, ‘Sholay’ is the only film in the industry which is appreciated for many reasons and all the characters are highly commended. Especially, the audiences love the character Gabbar, imitate him in daily conversation, completely ignoring his mean streak once they see the movie till this date.

The movie was produced when Amitabh Bachchan was a rising star, who had proved himself in Anand and Zanjeer. The movie brought a lot of success and popularity to Big B than Dharmendra.
